About This Tour

Cities Visited:
Dublin, Kilbeggan, Galway, Kylemore, Co. Clare, Killarney, Blarney, Kildare, Kilkenn

Dublin Pubs: At one time Dublin had over 4,000 pubs where locals could indulge in their favourite tipple. As time passed laws came into being to control the amount of pubs in the city. Now Dublin has almost 750 licensed pubs, each with its own style and particular clientele. The Dublin pub is far from being a mere drinking emporium alone. Each has it own special character, and many have developed far-flung reputations for specialising in specific aspects of Irish social culture - traditional music, song and dance, sport and literature and high quality cuisine served in a relaxed informal atmosphere. All, however, are centres of Irish community life where the art of conversation finds effortless expression and no one remains a stranger for long.

The journey ends on the roof in the Gravity Bar with a pint and a spectacular view of Dublin. Welcome Drink tonight at the one of the most traditional Irish pubs number one bar, the Mont Clare Hotel. A well-known Dublin landmark was much frequented by the renowned Irish writer James Joyce during his early writing career.

On then to the seat of learning at the heart of Dublin – Trinity College. Walk across the cobbled squares to the old library and see one of Ireland''s greatest treasures – the famed 8th century Book of Kells. Then our Tour Director reveals a Hidden Treasure of the city to us! This evening, meet at 7.15 pm in the Duke Pub and join the “Dublin Literary Crawl.” You are transported away from everyday life to the richness of Ireland’s famous writers including Joyce, O’Casey, Yeats and Behan. Each group is led by actors on a trail from pub to pub – no props, no lights, no make-up, just the voice and personality of the actor. Nothing like it exists anywhere else in the world. (Full breakfast)

  • Day 4- Dublin – Galway (2 nights) Depart Dublin and travel through the midlands via Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass and arriving in Kilbeggan, at Locke’s Distillery. Established in 1757, Locke’s Distillery is the oldest licensed pot still distillery in the world. Locke’s produced triple distilled malt whiskey for nearly two hundred years. Now open as a museum, guided tours follow the process from the grinding of the grain to the casking of the final product. Peer down into the 28ft deep solid oak vats to where the yeast and worts fermented. Over 90 per cent of the original machinery is now restored and can be seen working daily. The balance of the evening is free to explore Galways'' pubs which are legendary and hum with energy all year round. (Full breakfast)

On July 9th 1939, Pan Am''s luxury Flying Boat, the "Yankee Clipper" landed at Foynes. This was the first commercial passenger flight on a direct route from the USA to Europe.
